SOCIAL STUDIES PHILOSOPHY
Social studies instruction is used to help students become globalized, responsive citizens of the world. It equips students with the knowledge and skillset to be agents of change.
Social studies instruction includes the following powerful learning elements:
lessons that are meaningful, integrative, value-based, active, and challenging
multiple forms of input, including the utilization of primary and secondary sources
demonstrations allowing students to act as historians, geographers, and economists
real-world experiences where students apply content knowledge firsthand
critical thinking and problem-solving skills
an inclusive environment where multiple viewpoints are acknowledged and valued
accountable talk among students to expand and collaborate in learning
learning rooted in appropriate GLCE standards
Social studies instruction also encourages active participation in school and the surrounding community by:
promoting students to act as responsible community participants through service
exploring various areas of community to understand the past, present, and future
