MATHEMATICS PHILOSOPHY

Mathematics instruction drives students to use higher-order thinking to solve problems.
Mathematics instruction should include high-level math tasks that allow students to:

  • make thinking visible to the teacher and their peers

  • be challenged to their individual level

  • encourage students to solve problems in multiple ways and acknowledge other solutions

  • utilize manipulatives, diagrams, models, and tools to help guide learning

  • participate in authentic tasks with real world context, keeping students’ background knowledge in mind

  • create a math dialogue to explain reasoning and ensure participation

  • encourage a culture of collaborative learning

Mathematics instruction should also utilize center based learning which includes:

  • differentiated groups to help guide “on level” instruction

  • formative assessment to address misconceptions and see student-thinking

  • instruction and lessons in rooted in Common Core State Standards
